Military Specification CARC Coating

Military Spec CARC CoatingCybershield has extended its capability of applying conductive paints and commercial decorative paints to apply mil spec CARC coating onto military equipment, including plated plastic parts as well as metal parts (aluminum and steel).  Chemical Agent Resistant Coating or CARC paint is specified for use on tactical military equipment, including ground, aviation, munitions and related support equipment.

The purpose of the CARC paint is to withstand the harsh chemicals used in the decontamination process.

Military Spec CARC PaintCybershield offers its industry leading robotic spray application methods to apply CARC paint.  With Cybershield numerous paint robots, CARC paint thickness can be precisely controlled from part-to-part and lot-to-lot.  The consistent and repeatable robotic application of CARC paint overcomes a leading cause of CARC coating failure – incorrect CARC paint thickness caused by manual application methods.

Cybershield has extensive experience applying CARC coatings using paint robots and can provide this capability for your next mil spec CARC paint application.  Additionally, paint robot application provides extensive production capacity since paint robots not only apply more consistent and controlled CARC coating, they also paint parts at faster rates than possible with manual paint application.

Cybershield is qualified to apply both mil spec primer and CARC coating.

Military Specification
Coating Description
MIL-P-53030

Water borne, air-drying, corrosion inhibiting, epoxy primer for pretreatment of ferrous and non-ferrous metal substrates.  This primer is lead and chromate free and is compatible with Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC coating) aliphatic polyurethane topcoats.  The primer is intended for use on clean, chemically pretreated metal surfaces.  It is a water reducible epoxy primer and contains no more than 2.8 pounds/gallon (340 grams/liter) of volatile organic compounds (VOC).

MIL-DTL-64159
Type I and Type II

Water borne chemical agent resistant coating (CARC coating) aliphatic polyurethane used as a finish coat on military tactical equipment.  This coating is lead chromate and hazardous air pollutants (HAPS) Free and has maximum volatile organic compound (VOC) content of 1.8 pounds/gallon (220 grams/liter).
The coating is available in one of the following FED-STD-595 colors

  • Green 383, 34094
  • Black, 37030
  • Brown 383, 30051
  • Tan 686A, 33446
  • Aircraft Green, 34031
  • Aircraft Gray, 36300

Cybershield has focused its efforts on application of water borne mil spec primer (MIL-P-53030) and CARC paint (MIL-DTL-64159) due to the improved coating performance, including smoother surface finish, increased hardness and resistance to scratching and scuffing.  Additionally, there are significant environmental benefits for the water borne primer and CARC paint.  Both are free of hazardous air pollutants (HAPS), lead and chromate, and are low in VOC.

CARC paint film adhesion is determined in accordance with ASTM D 3359 standard, which Cybershield has extensive experience using for functional and decorative plating and paint coatings applied onto plastic and metal part.  The resultant test rating shall be classified as scale 4B or better.
